The H-1B visa lottery for FY 2026 officially closed on March 24, 2025, marking the end of another anxious waiting period for thousands of international professionals hoping to continue their journey in the U.S.
With only 85,000 slots available and over 470,000 eligible registrations submitted, chances were slim, especially for bachelor’s degree holders, who had an estimated 12% selection rate. Even those with U.S. master’s degrees, who benefit from a two-tiered draw, faced odds of just under 25%.
If you weren’t selected this year, you’re far from alone. But the real question is—what now?
Option 1: Consider a Day 1 CPT Graduate Program
For F-1 students nearing the end of OPT or STEM OPT extensions, timing is everything. Many face a race against the clock to maintain legal status. One of the most viable short-term solutions? Enrolling in a Day 1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) graduate program.
These programs allow international students to begin practical training from the first day of their enrollment, helping them remain in status while continuing to work in their field.
Why Day 1 CPT?
Stay in the U.S. Legally - Avoid falling out of status by transitioning smoothly from OPT to a new F-1 program with work authorization.
Work While You Study - Continue working for your employer or gain new professional experience while pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree.
Try Again Next Year - Enrolling in a new degree program can make you eligible for the H-1B lottery again, especially under the master’s cap if the program qualifies.
Who’s a Good Fit for Day 1 CPT?
F-1 students whose OPT or STEM OPT is about to expire
H-1B hopefuls who were not selected and want to stay work-authorized in the U.S.
Professionals considering an advanced degree to boost future H-1B chances or career growth
Anyone looking to stay compliant while reapplying in next year’s H-1B cycle
Caution: Choose the Right School
Not all Day 1 CPT programs are created equal. USCIS scrutinizes CPT usage—especially if it looks like a workaround rather than genuine academic engagement.
Look for accredited universities with structured, compliant CPT policies. Many reputable schools offer hybrid or weekend-based formats with limited on-campus attendance requirements, making it feasible for working professionals.
Other Alternatives to Explore
While Day 1 CPT is the most immediate lifeline, it’s not the only one:
Cap-Exempt H-1B Jobs: Some positions at universities, nonprofit research institutions, or government entities aren’t subject to the H-1B cap at all.
Dependent Visas: If your spouse holds an H-1B, L-1, or another qualifying visa, you might be able to transition to a dependent visa (e.g., H-4).
Second H-1B Lottery (if any): Some years see a second lottery in summer if selected applicants don’t follow through. Stay informed—there’s still a chance.
Leave and Reapply: For some, returning home temporarily and reapplying next year may be the only option—but it's best to consult an immigration attorney first.
Plan Ahead: Your Next Steps Matter
The H-1B process has always been a numbers game, but the stakes are higher than ever. If your name wasn’t picked, don’t wait for things to fall apart. Act now.
